IMPORTANT NEWS As the result of the formation of the Kakos School of Arts and Sciences, several departments will be merged together to form new, integrated departments while others will remain as they were. We expect this process to be completed by the end of the Spring 2024 semester. Read below to learn more.

Be a part of innovative research. The Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences is a recent fusion of the Department of Biology and Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. As a student in the Biological and Chemical Sciences Department, you will have a personalized learning experience with small class sizes and dedicated faculty who are committed to teaching. The department emphasizes hands-on learning in the labs and offers all students the opportunity to do one-on-one research with a faculty member. Students are able to pursue their passions, prepare for graduate school and most importantly — make a difference in the world.

Department of Communication, Sound and Media Arts
Find your voice and develop the courage to be creative. The Department of Communication, Sound and Media Arts is a newly-launched collective of three previously distinct departments: the Department of Communication, Department of Art History and Digital Media Art and Department of Music and Theater. Hands-on learning is what drives this department. As a communication and creative media student, you will have the chance to attend live tapings of shows in the city or hone your writing and editing skills as a reporter for The Quadrangle student newspaper. Our professors are scholars who have studied and performed around the world, and bring their unique perspectives to the classroom. You also have unparalleled access to internship and career opportunities at New York City’s top companies, brands and publications.
Department of Computer Science
Whether you’re interested in protecting data or harnessing its power, you’re in the right place. The department of Computer Science is committed to educating the next generation of leaders in computing and related fields. The department creates an environment for you to learn how to design algorithms, utilize them in software using the most popular programming languages and how computer science solutions are used in various applications. Students within the department engage in theoretical foundations, spending time in the computer labs under supervision and guidance of faculty, and gain hands-on learning through software design projects, which culminate in a senior capstone design. The department is unique in that it prepares students for work in nearly any computer-related field, in a variety of industries, with the flexibility of pursuing a foundation in the sciences or arts.

The Department of Education is where you learn to excel at understanding how others learn. Faculty members within the department are scholars and practitioners, widely published on a variety of topics including technology in the classroom, curriculum development, and assessment and optimizing classroom environments. Field work and other hands-on learning tools are vital to your experience as an education major. Real-world experience begins during freshman or sophomore year with classroom observations and culminates your final year with student teaching. Department of English, World Languages and Literatures

The Department of English, World Languages and Literatures is a newly-launched fusion of two previously distinct departments: the Department of English and Department of Modern Languages and Literatures. Build a well-rounded liberal arts foundation and a broad literary background in English, literatures and contemporary fields. You are encouraged to participate in study abroad for a semester or a summer term. Manhattan College partners with several educational networks, allowing you to choose from hundreds of study abroad locations worldwide. The newly-established Department of History, Political Studies and International Studies at Manhattan College represents a fusion of two previously distinct departments: the Department of History and the Department of Political Science. Our expert faculty are the driving force of this department. They are published scholars in their respective fields, and many are also highly active in top political organizations and agencies in New York City, including the United Nations. Research and hands-on learning are important parts of the experience as a history, political science or international studies student. If you’re looking for a pathway to a solution for society’s biggest problems, you have arrived. The Department of Mathematics and Physics, a recent fusion of the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Physics, features a collegial and supportive learning environment, small class sizes and cutting-edge research experiences. Students conduct research with faculty on campus and at laboratories around the world. As a mathematics major, you will be invited to participate in national mathematics competitions such as the Putnam Exam and the Mathematical Modeling Contest. Department of Religion and Philosophy
Investigate life’s biggest questions. The newly-established Department of Religion and Philosophy at Manhattan College represents a fusion of three previously distinct departments: the Department of Religious Studies, Department of Philosophy and the Department of Peace Studies. As a student in the Department, you will develop an interdisciplinary and complete understanding of issues pertaining to peace, philosophy and justice. Philosophy is a skill, practice and set of tools for reflecting about our thinking and building awareness of the ignorances and injustices that shape our world. In addition, you will receive rigorous training in critical thinking, research and practical peacebuilding skills, and gain hands-on learning in the form of internships and community-engaged courses.

The Social and Behavioral Sciences Department is a newly-launched collective of three previously distinct departments: the Department of Psychology, Department of Counseling & Therapy and the Department of Sociology.
